Hamza ibn Abd al Muttalib رضی اللہ عنہ was one of the most prominent and famous personalities in Islamic history. He was among the early converts to Islam. His personality exemplified courage, bravery, and strength, serving as a role model for others. Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to the service of Islam and did not fear losing anything for its sake.

Hamza Ibn Abd al Muttalib رضی اللہ عنہ was a companion of the Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم, a professional military man, and a skilled warrior. He was distinguished by his character, possessing a keen sense of justice and a reputation as the protector of the weak and persecuted.

Hamza ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib's Acceptance of Islam

One day, while the Holy Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم was sitting quietly on a mountain, Abu Jahal and some others came to him. They laughed and said mean things to him. Abu Jahal even mocked the Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم by throwing dust on his forehead, which landed on his clothes and face.

Despite this, the Holy Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم remained silent and didn't respond. Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib رضی اللہ عنہ, upon witnessing this disrespectful act, dismounted his horse and, with his bow, struck Abu Jahal on the head. Even though he had not yet embraced Islam, Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib رضی اللہ عنہ loved his nephew, the Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم, deeply.

In response to this attack, Hamza ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib رضی اللہ عنہ declared, “I bear witness that there is no God but Allah and Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم is His messenger." Abu Jahal, aware of Ameer Hamzah رضی اللہ عنہ strength and bravery, did not dare to engage in a confrontation and remained silent.

Hazrat Hamza رضی اللہ عنہ played a vital role in many early events of Islamic history. It is said that he also helped in rebuilding the Holy Kaaba after the destruction caused by a flood.

Hamza ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib رضی اللہ عنہ was born in Mecca two years prior to the birth of the Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم, thus he was very close to him. His father was Abdul Muttalib, who was also the father of Hazrat Abdullah (the father of the Holy Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم), making Hamza ibn Abd al Muttalib رضی اللہ عنہ the paternal uncle of the Holy Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم. His mother's name was Halah bint Wahab. He belonged to the Quraish tribe, specifically the Banu Hashim clan.

Symbol of Resilience and Sacrifice

Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم bestowed upon Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib رضی اللہ عنہ the title ‘Asadullah’ (The Lion of Allah) in recognition of his remarkable valor. During the Battle of Badr, he was among the three warriors selected by the Prophet Muhammad صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم to confront the Meccan army's three best fighters.

Hamza Ibn Abd al-Muttalib رضی اللہ عنہ had never tasted defeat and was ultimately slain by a treacherous stab in the back with a spear during the Battle of Mount Uhud. This cowardly act was carried out by a slave of the idolaters who lacked the courage to face Him in honorable combat.

When the idolaters learned that Hamza ibn Abd al-Muttalib رضی اللہ عنہ had accepted Islam, they ceased openly attacking Muslims, fearing retribution from this new member of the Ummah.

Hamza ibn 'Abd al-Muttalib رضی اللہ عنہ, whom everyone in Mecca feared, carried out his service honorably and unwaveringly until the very end, as a brave defender of the true faith.

 

How did Hamza رضی اللہ عنہ Die?

Hamza Ibn Abd al-Muttalib رضی اللہ عنہ fought with great fearlessness in the Battle of Uhud, and his heroic feats on the battlefield became legendary in Muslim military history. However, tragically, he was martyred in the same battle where he had demonstrated dominance attaining the lofty rank among the martyrs of Uhud.

He was killed by the javelin of Wahshi ibn Harb, an Abyssinian slave, who earned his freedom from his master, Jubair bin Mut’im, with that successful throw. Ameer Hamzah رضی اللہ عنہ was known for maintaining and upholding familial ties and for performing good deeds in great abundance.

His age at the time was 54. The grave of Hamza Ibn Abdul Muttalib رضی اللہ عنہ is near Mount Uhud in Madina, Saudi Arabia.
