parents disgraced me in front of so-and-so!’ And the reality is that explaining someone in front of another person is like disgracing him.

Sayyiduna Abu Darda رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُ narrates: ‘The one who advised his brother in front of everyone disgraced him, and the one who advised in private adorned him.’ (Tanbih-ul-Ghafileen, p. 49)

Therefore, instead of mentioning the child’s flaws in front of others, mention his virtues to them. This will encourage the child and he will strive to become even better. However, just to make him learn a lesson, there is no harm in sometimes saying to him that you will punish him in front of everyone if he makes the same mistake again.
