Dear Islamic brothers! You have heard that by doing trade accordance to the Shari’ah, traders attain great blessings. But alas! Due to being away from the Islamic knowledge and the daydreaming of becoming rich overnight, the noble profession of business has become a series of evils such as lying, backbiting, tale-telling, slandering, plundering, causing harm, practising black magic, false oaths, committing unlawful gazing, breaking promises, becoming greedy, cheating, devouring usury, taking and giving bribes, earning unlawful livelihood, causing unnecessary inflation etc. Most likely, this is all due to turning away from Islamic teachings and essential trade rulings. In terms of business transactions or trade dealings, period of the blessed companions was a golden era because in that blessed era, only that individual who was a scholar and would refrain from the sin of usury was allowed to do trade in the market place.  It was the order of Ameer-ul-Mu`mineen, Sayyiduna ‘Umar رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ: Only that individual should come to our marketplace who is a scholar, if this is not the case, then he will end up consuming usury.

(Tafseer Qurtubi, vol. 2, pp. 267)

Similarly, the lives of the pious predecessors رَحِمَهُمُ الـلّٰـه who came after the era of the blessed companions رَضِیَ اللهُ عَنْهُم are a source of guidance for business community because they were not only the high-ranking worshippers and ascetic individuals but they were also truthful and trustworthy businessmen whose trade was purely according to the Islamic principles and laws.
