The name of Imam Shāfiʿi رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه is Muhammad bin Idrīs. He was born in 150 AH. Scholars also explain how he was born on the day that the foremost imam and juristic master, Imam Abū Ḥanīfah رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه, passed away. He was tall, well-mannered and liked by the public. He treated people with compassion and was extremely righteous and practised the sunnah.
He was born in Yemen, and his father passed away when he was only two years old. His mother then took him to Makkah, where he grew up and acquired religious knowledge.[2] In fact, Allah opened the doors of knowledge for him. Imam Shāfiʿi رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه worked hard and had a passion for knowledge. When he was just 15 years old, the grand mufti of Makkah, Muslim bin Khālid Zanji رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه granted him permission to issue Islamic verdicts (otherwise known as fatwā).[3]
