What is a good deed?

Mawlana Muhammad Jawaid Attari Madani

The final Prophet of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم once said,  كُلُّ مَعْرُوفٍ صَدَقَة – “Every act of goodness is charity.”[1]

You must have heard the phrase “good deed.” Today, we will learn what these are. In Arabic, a good deed is referred to as معروف. Imam ībī رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه says in his hadith commentary:

Every action which entails obeying Allah and drawing close to Him, is a good deed. It also means something considered categorically virtuous by people when seeing it, such as good conduct with others and meeting them warmly etc.[2]

Taking this into context, this hadith means the reward of every good deed is like that of giving money in charity.[3]

Dear children! According to this, the meaning of good deeds is very vast. If we make some effort, we can perform many good deeds and earn the reward of giving charity at the same time. Many good deeds are easy to perform, and we can please Allah by doing them.

Here are some we can do to earn the same reward as giving charity:

* Meet people warmly and with a smile.

* Help elderly and frail people.

* Guide a blind person or lead him across a road.

* Assist your parents in household chores, serve them, and massage their hands and feet.

Every good action like this is a good deed, and every child should perform them. When you do good deeds, Allah will be pleased and He will give you Paradise. اِنْ شَــآءَالـلّٰـه

May Allah grant us ability to perform good deeds and avoid sins.
