The Meaning of the Name Muhammad
Qāḍī ʿIyāḍ Mālikī رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه states: The two blessed names of the beloved master, the Makkī Madanī Mustafa صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم, Ahmad and Muhammad, both derive from the word "Hamd" (praise), and they signify two distinct attributes of the beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم. Ahmad means: اَجَلُّ مَنْ حَمِدَ "The one who praises the most," that is (among all those who have praised Allah Almighty, whether they are humans, jinn, angels, any creature found in the heavens and the earth, trees, leaves, animals, birds, all beings that praise Allah Almighty), the one who has praised Allah Almighty the most is our beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم.
Similarly, the name Muhammad means: اَفْضَلُ مَنْ حُمِدَ "The one who is praised the most," that is (among all those who have been praised, in whatever context they have been praised), the one who has been praised the most is referred to as Muhammad.[1]
He further states: Thus, it is understood that the one who praises the most is my beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم, and the one who has been praised the most in the universe is also my beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم. On the Day of Judgment, the Liwā’ al-Ḥamd (Banner of Praise) will be given to the beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم, and the Maqām-e-Mahmūd will also be granted to him. Then, on the Day of Judgment, all the former and latter will praise him
