Causes of heedlessness

Dear Islamic brothers! Undoubtedly, those who attach their heart to worldly pleasures becomes oblivious of the Hereafter. Heedlessness makes a person audacious in committing sin. It stops one performing good deeds and displeases Allah Almighty. If we reflect, we see Allah Almighty has granted us countless bounties in the world, such as good businesses, comfortable jobs, grand houses, their countless amenities, and expensive cars. In fact, children are also a blessing for their parents.

Yet, we must keep in mind that over occupying ourselves with worldly delights leads to heedlessness and loss. It is mentioned in the 9th verse of Surah al-Munāfiqūn:

یٰۤاَیُّہَا  الَّذِیْنَ  اٰمَنُوْا  لَا تُلْہِکُمْ اَمْوَالُکُمْ  وَ لَاۤ  اَوْلَادُکُمْ عَنْ ذِکْرِ اللہِ ۚ وَ مَنْ یَّفْعَلْ  ذٰلِکَ  فَاُولٰٓئِکَ ھُمُ الْخٰسِرُوْنَ (۹)

O you who believe! Let not your wealth or your children divert you from the remembrance of Allah. And whosoever will do this, it is they who are the losers.[1]

In this verse, the believers are being advised to not be like hypocrites by allowing their children and wealth to make them heedless of Allah’s remembrance. The one who becomes preoccupied with the world and forgets the religion, does not have concern of his state due to his love for wealth, and becomes heedless of the Hereafter in pursuit of the happiness of his children will face immense loss. This is because he preferred this temporary world over the eternal bounties of the Hereafter.[2]
