Young Companions of the Holy Prophet
Sā’ib b.
Sayyidunā Sāˈib b. Yazid رَضِیَ الـلّٰـهُ عَنْهُمَا is one of many fortunate children who sat in the company of the beloved Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم. Here are details about his childhood.
Brief introduction
He was born in 2 AH, and he was the same age as Sayyidunā ꜤAbdullāh b. Zubayr and Sayyidunā NuꜤmān b. [1] At the age of seven, he and his father participated in the Farewell Hajj with the beloved Prophet [2] He was approximately 8 years old when the beloved Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم passed away, and he reported 22 Aḥādīth.[3]
Memorable childhood incident
Sayyidunā Sāˈib b. Yazid رَضِیَ الـلّٰـهُ عَنْهُمَا said, “I remember when I went with the children to Thaniyyat al-WadāꜤ to welcome the beloved Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم when he returned from the expedition of Tabuk.”[4]
The beloved Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم placed a hand on his head and supplicated for him to be blessed
Sayyidunā Sāˈib b. Yazid رَضِیَ الـلّٰـهُ عَنْهُمَا said, “My aunt took me to the beloved Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم and said, ‘O Messenger of Allah صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم! My nephew is ill.’ The holy Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم placed his blessed hand on my head and supplicated for me. Then he صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم performed ablution and I drank the water he used. After that, I stood behind him and saw the mark of prophethood between his shoulders.”[5]
Black hair in the middle of his head
The hair in the middle of Sāˈib b. Yazid’s رَضِیَ الـلّٰـهُ عَنْهُمَا head was black, whereas the rest of the hair on his head and beard were white. I asked him, “I swear by Allah Almighty, I have not seen a head like yours. This part of your head is black and the rest is white.” Sāˈib b. Yazid رَضِیَ الـلّٰـهُ عَنْهُمَا replied, “O my son! Should I not tell you about this?” I told him to tell me. He said, “When I was a child, I was playing with other children when the beloved Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم passed by. So, I greeted him, and he صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم responded and said, ‘Who are you?’ I answered, ‘I am Sāˈib b. Yazid.’ The Greatest and Final Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم placed his blessed hand on my head out of compassion and supplicated for me. Oath by Allah! These hairs will never turn white, they will always be black.[6]
