The definition of showing off

The Ameer of Ahl al-Sunnah, Mawlana Ilyas Attar al-Qadiri دَامَـتْ بَـرَكَـاتُـهُـمُ الْـعَـالِـيَـهْ writes in his book Call to Righteousness:

Worshipping Allah Almighty for a reason other than to please Him, is considered showing off. A person who does this seeks for people to know of his worship, to receive praise or money from them, or for them to think he is honourable.[1]

The same book also contains some examples of showing off we can learn from. Do bear in mind; showing off is an action dependant on intention. The examples we will discuss are definitely forms of showing off, but depending on intention, the rulings of these can change.

Let us all listen closely and try to better ourselves.

10 examples of showing off

1.   Learning Quranic recitation so people call you a qari.

2.   Using negative terms to describe yourself, like referring to yourself a sinner, so people praise your humility.

3.   Meeting people in a good way so they complement your manners.

4.   Wiping your tears when making dua in front of people, so they think you are wiping them to protect yourself from showing off.
