Sunnan and manners of visiting cemeteries

Dear Islamic brothers! Let us listen to the Sunnan and etiquettes of visiting a cemetery, derived from the booklet 163 Madani Pearls, authored by the Mawlana Ilyas Attar al-Qadiri. First, reflect on this blessed hadith of the Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم:

1.    I had forbidden you from visiting graves. Now, you may visit them, as they instil disinterest for the world and remind one of the Hereafter.”[1]

Here are some practices and manners of visiting graves:

When intending to visit a grave (whether belonging to a saint or normal Muslim), it is recommended to first pray two units of nafl salah at home (in a permissible time). In each unit, after reciting al-Fātiḥah, recite Āyat al-Kursī once and al-Ikhlāṣ three times. One should then send the reward of this salah to the deceased. Allah will illuminate the deceased's grave and grant immense rewards to the one offering this salah.[2]

*     While on your way to the cemetery or shrine, avoid engaging in idle or frivolous talk.[3]
