Children’s Hadith
The Benefits and Blessings of Miswak
Muhammad Javed Attari Madani
The final Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said, تَسَوَّكُوا “Use the miswak.”[1]
Dear children! Our beautiful religion of Islam emphasises the importance of cleanliness to the extent that it is declared “half of faith” in one Hadith.[2] Our religion teaches us how to purify ourselves in every aspect, and the speech and actions of the beloved Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم teach us to clean our mouths with a miswak.
There are many other benefits of using a miswak besides cleanliness, like gaining the pleasure of Allah Almighty and His beloved Prophet, it is a Sunnah to use it before performing ablution, and the reward of prayers increases when it is used before ablution. Using miswak improves memory, it cleans the mouth and teeth, and it cures many stomach and intestinal diseases. Using a miswak is a blessed Sunnah of the beloved Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم.
Dear children! Act upon this Sunnah and make a habit of using a miswak, especially after waking up in the morning, going to sleep at night and before performing ablution. By doing so, you will gain the reward of acting upon the Sunnah, your mouth and teeth will be cleaned and you will be protected from many illnesses. May Allah grant us the ability to act upon the blessed sunan of the beloved Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم.
