صَلُّوۡا عَلَى الۡحَبِيۡب                                     صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلٰى مُحَمَّد

Cleansing the heart from worldly love

Dear Islamic brothers! Another way to attain love of Allah is to remove love for the world from one’s heart. Unfortunately, as we are smitten by love for this world and enthralled by its delights, the sweetness of love for Allah is diminishing in our hearts.

If we were true in our love for Allah, our prayers would not be missed, we would not abandon the fasts of Ramadan, and we would not be lazy in offering our zakat. In other words, it is love for the world that stops us loving Allah as we should. We should rid ourselves of worldly love, as it leads to nothing but loss.

The Companion ꜤAbdullāh b. MasꜤūd رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ narrates; the final Prophet of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم declared:

Whoever drinks the love of this world will surely taste three things: severity which shall not remove his tiredness, selfishness which will not make him rich, and desires he can never fulfil.

The world seeks and is sought. Whoever seeks the world will be pursued by the Hereafter until death comes and seizes him. Whoever seeks the Hereafter, the world will pursue him until he acquires all his provision from it.^[1]

A shaykh from Basra came to the saint RābiꜤah Baṣriyyah رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْهَا and complained about the world. She said:
