SAYYIDUNA MAHMUD B. AL-RABI AND SAYYIDUNA UMAR B. ABI SALAMAH رَضِیَ الـلّٰـهُ عَنْهُمَا

Young Companions of the beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم

Sayyidunā Mamūd b. al-Rabī and Sayyidunā Umar b. Abī Salamah رَضِیَ الـلّٰـهُ عَنْهُمَا

From amongst the fortunate children that came in the Prophetic court were Sayyidunā Mamūd b. al-Rabī and Sayyidunā Umar b. Abī Salamah رَضِیَ الـلّٰـهُ عَنْهُمَا. Read some biographical details concerning their childhood and illuminate your heart with love for the noble Companions رَضِیَ الـلّٰـهُ عَنْهُم

Sayyidunā Mamūd b. Rabī رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ

He was an Anārī Khazrajī, born in 6 AH in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah to Sayyidah Jamīlah bint Abī aaah. [1]

Aādīth are related from him.

Memorable childhood account:

He narrates:

I remember that when I was five years old, the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم came to our home. He took water from a bucket in our home and proceeded to squirt water on my face from his mouth [light-heartedly].[2]

Mufti Sharīf al-aqq al-Amjadī رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه states:

It is established from this that cheerfulness with your children is from the Sunnah and taking blessings from the beloved Prophet’s blessed saliva and remnant water is also from the Sunnah. [3]

Passing: At the time of the passing of the beloved Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم, he was around 5 years old.[4] He passed away at the age of 93 in 99 AH in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah.[5]

Sayyidunā Umar b. Abī Salamah رَضِیَ الـلّٰـهُ عَنْهُمَا

He is the son of Sayyidunā Abū Salamah Abdullāh and Sayyidah Umm Salamah Hind رَضِیَ الـلّٰـهُ عَنْهُمَا. He was born in 2 AH in Abyssinia. After the passing of his father, the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم married his mother Sayyidah Umm Salamah رَضِیَ الـلّٰـهُ عَنْهُمَا and he came under the supervision of the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم.[6]

Number of narrations: 12 noble Aādīth are narrated from him.[7]

Memorable meal with the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم  :

In one narration he mentions:

I was in the supervision of the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم  in my childhood. My hand would roam in the dish of food. The beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said, “O child, recite the name of Allah, eat with your right hand and eat from in front of you.” After that, I always ate in this way.[8]

Passing: He was nine years old at the time of the passing of the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم. He passed away in 83 AH in al-Madinah al-Munawwarah.[9]

May Allah Almighty have mercy upon them and grant us forgiveness without account for their sake.
