Yusuf b. Abdullah رَضِیَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا

Young Companions

Yūsuf b. Abdullāh رَضِیَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا

Oways Yamin Attari Madani

One of those to whom Allah granted the honour of being the Prophet’s Companion right from their childhood, was Yūsuf b. Abdullāh رَضِیَ اللهُ عَنْهُمَا.

He was the son of Abdullāh b. Salām and a descendant of Prophet Yūsuf b. Yaqūb عَـلَيْهِمَا الـسَّلَام.[1]

How his name was kept

He رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ narrates, “The Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم named me Yūsuf, sat me in his blessed lap, and cast his hand over my head.”[2]

Narrations

Three adīth are reported from him.[3]

A hadith conveyed from him

He رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ narrates, “I saw the Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم take a portion of barley bread and place a date upon it. He said, ‘This (date) is the condiment for this (barley bread).’ He then consumed it.”[4]

Mufti Amad Yār Khan Naīmī رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه writes, Referring to the date as a condiment is metaphorical, i.e., the bread can be eaten with it, and it is like a condiment.[5]

Passing

He رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ passed away in 100 AH, during the caliphate of Umar b. Abd al-Azīz رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ.[6]

May Allah have mercy upon him and grant us forgiveness without accountability for his sake.
