night of Shaʿbān arrives, stand (i.e. worship) in it and observe a fast in the day.”[1]

Salvation from Hell

Amīr al-Muˈminīn, Sayyidunā ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه was once busy in worship on the 15th night of Shaʿbān. When he lifted his head, he found a piece of green paper whose light was spread towards the heavens. The following words were written on it: هٰذہٖ بَرَاءَۃٌ مِّنَ النَّارِ مِنَ الْمَلِکِ الْعَزِیْزِ لِعَبْدِہٖ عُمَرَ بْنِ عَبْدِالْعَزِیْز - “This is a written order of freedom from Hellfire granted by Allah to His servant, ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz.”[2]

سُـبْحٰـنَ الـلّٰــه Dear Islamic brothers! Just as this incident informs us of the virtues and excellences of Sayyidunā ʿUmar b. ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه, it also demonstrates to us the greatness of Laylat al-Barāʾah. May we be granted the ability to perform an abundance of worship on this night and be included amongst those who are forgiven. May Allah forgive us all.

اٰمِیْن بِجَاہِ النَّبِیِّ الْاَمِیْن  صلَّی اللہ عَلَیْہِ واٰلہٖ وسلَّم 

What we can do on this night

The renowned commentator of the Quran, Mufti Aḥmad Yār Khān Naʿīmi رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه, says:

Laylat al-Barāʾah is an extremely sacred night in which it is sunnah to visit the graveyard and recite Fātiḥah. Visiting the shrines and resting places of the pious is also a rewardable act. If possible, one should fast on the 14th and 15th. Another action one may do on the 15th, is to recite Fātiḥah over a sweet dish and
