burn with heat”. In ancient Arabia, when the names of months were introduced, they were named in correspondence with the weather at that respective time. During this procedure, Ramaḍān came during a period of hot weather, which led to it receiving this name.[1]

Mufti Aḥmad Yār Khān Naʿīmi رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه says:

The same way in which a furnace cleanses impurities from iron, fashions it into valuable pieces and turns gold into something worthy to be worn by one’s beloved; fasting has the sins of the fasting person forgiven, increases the pious in rank and draws one closer to Allah.  Muslims bear the pangs of hunger and thirst, causing their sins to be burnt away. This is the very reason this month is referred to as Ramaḍān.[2]

Allah’s Messenger صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said, “This month was named Ramaḍān because it burns sin.”[3]

Other names for this month

Shaykh Shihāb al-Dīn Aḥmad bin Ḥijāzi رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه relates how Ramaḍān has two other names:

1.   The month of patience.

2.   The month of compassion.[4]

Mufti Aḥmad Yār Khān Naʿīmi رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه also mentioned how Ramaḍān is known as the month of increasing sustenance. He says:
