Backbiting

O devotees of the Prophet! Backbiting also makes one deserving of the valley of Wayl in Hell. Backbiting is when a person’s flaws are mentioned behind their back in a derogatory manner.[1]

Regretfully, backbiting has become widespread in our society today; if two people meet and sit, the doors to backbiting and talebearing are flung open.

*    Whether at the shop or at the dining table, people engage in backbiting.

*    In the car, at the office, at home, or even while waiting for prayer in the masjid, people gossip and backbite, earning their place in Hell.

The destructive effects of backbiting

Dear Islamic brothers, backbiting is an extremely harmful deed. In the noble Quran, Allah Almighty says:

O you who believe! Refrain from excessive speculation—˹for˺ some speculation is sinful—and do not spy on each other nor backbite one another. Would anyone among you like to consume the flesh of his dead brother? So you would loathe it. And fear Allah; indeed Allah is Most Accepting of repentance, Most-Merciful.[2]

The renowned spiritual guide and leader of Ahl al-Sunnah, Mawlana Ilyas Attar al-Qadiri دَامَـتْ بَـرَكَـاتُـهُـمُ الْـعَـالِـيَـهْ summarizes the destructive consequences of backbiting as follows:
