Sunan and etiquettes of walking
Dear Islamic brothers! Let us listen to some sunan and etiquettes of walking from the booklet of the renowned spiritual guide and leader of Ahl al-Sunnah, Mawlana Ilyas Attar al-Qadiri دَامَـتْ بَـرَكَـاتُـهُـمُ الْـعَـالِـيَـهْ entitled 163 Madani Pearls:
* Allah Almighty states in verse 37 of Surah Banī Isrāˈīl:
وَ لَا تَمْشِ فِی الْاَرْضِ مَرَحًا ۚ اِنَّکَ لَنْ تَخْرِقَ الْاَرْضَ وَ لَنْ تَبْلُغَ الْجِبَالَ طُوْلًا (۳۷)
And do not walk upon the earth arrogantly, indeed you will never split open the earth, and you will never reach the height of mountains.[1]
* The beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said, “There was a man covered in two shawls who walked arrogantly, so he was swallowed by the earth and will continue to sink until the Day of Judgement.”[2]
* When the beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم would walk, he صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم would bend forward slightly as though he صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم was descending from a height.[3]
* If there is no obstacle, walk on the edge of the path at a medium pace; neither so fast that people stare at you nor so slow that you appear unwell to onlookers.
