Some etiquettes of sitting

O devotees of the Prophet, let us listen to some manners and etiquettes of sitting from the booklet of Ameer-e-Ahl-e-Sunnat دَامَـتْ بَـرَكَـاتُـهُـمُ الْـعَـالِـيَـهْ titled ‘A horrific camel’:

*The Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said: ‘Those people who sat in a place for a long period of time without doing the Zikr (remembrance) of Allah Almighty or reciting Salat upon the Prophet  صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم and then separated from there have suffered a loss. If Allah wants, He may punish them, and if He wants, He may forgive them.’ (Mustadrak, vol. 2, p. 168, Hadees 1869)

   *Sayyiduna Ibn-e-‘Umar رَضِىَ الـلّٰـهُ عَـنْهُما has stated: ‘I saw the Messenger of Allah صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم sitting in the courtyard of the Ka’bah in the Ihtiba position’. (Bukhari, vol. 4, p. 180, Hadees 6272)

The Ihtiba position is to sit on the buttocks with the arms circled around the shins. This position of sitting is considered to be a form of humility. (Bahar-e-Shari’at, vol. 3, p. 432, summarised)

*Sitting in this position or whatever position you sit in, the shape of the part of the body that ought to be covered should not be visible. Therefore, one should use a shawl to cover the body from the knees till the feet to cover himself. If the Kurta (long upper garment) is in accordance to the Sunnah, then its lower part can also be used to cover that part of the body as well.
