Catching the Nafs in a strange way

Sayyiduna Abu Muhammad Murta’ish رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه states: I performed many Hajj and most of them were performed without any provisions. Then it was made apparent to me that this was all the deception of my Nafs, because my mother once told me to fill a pitcher with water, and her command felt burdensome upon my Nafs. Thus, I came to know that my Nafs only agreed with me on my journeys to Hajj for its own satisfaction, and deceived me, for if my Nafs has been annihilated, then why would it find it so difficult in fulfilling a right of the Shari’ah (i.e. obeying my mother). (Al-Risala-tul-Qushayriyyah, p. 135) (Aashiqan-e-Rasool ki 130 Hikayaat, p. 102)

The pleasure found in love for fame makes worship easy

Dear Islamic brothers! You have just heard of the beautiful mindset that our pious predecessors رَحِمَهُمُ الـلّٰـهُ possessed and how they preferred humility. Some people have a habit of meeting people with humility and courteously, but their conduct with their parents, siblings and family is harsh, disrespectful, and sometimes hurtful. Why? Because displaying lofty character among the public is a means of widespread acceptance, whereas, displaying good conduct at home does not guarantee a person any special respect or honour. Therefore, these people present themselves as pleasant in front of people.

Similarly, there are some Islamic brothers who strive their utmost for Mustahab actions but fall short in fulfilling their Faraaid and Wajibat. For example, they display heedlessness in obeying parents, raising children in accordance to the Shari’ah and gaining Fard knowledge for themselves. This account contains important points for them to take heed from too.
