than being in the Masjid and spending that blessed night worshipping Allah?
In normal circumstances, staying within the Masijd is itself a great honour and privilege. Then consider the rank of the person who performs I’tikaaf, as he has left the world and come to the Masjid solely seeking the pleasure of Allah.
It is found in Fatawa Alamgeeri, “The benefits of I’tikaaf are visible for all to see. A person completely fixates his attention and efforts in worshipping Allah and seeking His pleasure. In this way, a person leaves all of his worldly tasks behind, which were obstacles in him attaining true closeness to Allah. The person performing I’tikaaf spends all his time in Salah, either haqeeqatan or hukman (meaning, he is either performing Salah, or waiting for it, which contains similar reward).
The essence of I’tikaaf is to perform Salah in congregation or to remain in wait for it. In this way, a person performing I’tikaaf resembles the angels, as they do not disobey Allah in any way, and wholeheartedly act upon any command they are given. They also resemble the angels in that, as they praise and glorify Allah day and night, and do not tire in doing so.”[1]
