*   Do not trouble your neighbours with the smell of your broth; rather, send some of it to them.

The Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم then said: اَتَدْرُوْنَ مَا حَقُّ الْجَارِوَالَّذِیۡ نَفْسِیۡ بِیَدِہٖ مَا یَبْلُغُ حَقَّ الْجَارِ اِلَّا قَلِیْلاً مِّمَّن رَّحِمَ اللہُ - “Do you know the rights of a neighbour? I take oath by He Who has power over my soul! Only those whom Allah has had mercy upon can fulfil the rights of a neighbour.”[1]

Three types of neighbours

The Prophet صَلَّى الـلّٰـهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم also explained, “There are three types of neighbours:

1.   Those who have three rights.

2.   Those who have two rights.

3.   Those who have one right.

He who is your neighbour, related to you and Muslim has three rights (the rights of being a neighbour, a relative and Muslim). He who is your neighbour and Muslim has two rights (the rights of being a neighbour and Muslim), and he who is your neighbour but not a Muslim has one right (the right of being a neighbour).[2]

Dear Islamic brothers! Our religion of Islam is beautiful. Even if your neighbour is not a Muslim, he still has rights. You must still fulfil his rights.

The lamp of Bayazid Bistami رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه

The neighbour of Sayyidunā Bāyazīd Bisṭāmi رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه was a non-Muslim. One day, the neighbour embarked on a journey and left his family at home. During the night, Sayyidunā Bāyazīd Bisṭāmi رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَلَيْه heard one of the
