better to sprinkle water on it. The grave should be raised by a handspan or slightly more.[1]

*               Reciting the adhan after the burial is a rewardable act, and it is beneficial for the deceased.[2]

*               It is recommended to recite the first and last part of Sūrat al-Baqarah after the burial. Stand near the head of the deceased and recite الٓمّٓ  until مُفْلِحُوْن, and اٰمَنَ الرَّسُوۡلُ until the end of the Sūrat. [3]

*               It is permissible to place the Shajarah or ‘Ahd Naama in the grave. It is better to place it in the direction of the qibla where the deceased is facing by making a cavity in the side of the grave. In fact, al-Durr al-Mukhtār states that it is permissible to write the ‘Ahd Naama on the shroud, and we are hopeful it is a means of forgiveness.

*               It is permissible to write بِسْمِ اللہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیۡمِ on the deceased’s chest and forehead. It is also permissible to writeبِسْمِ اﷲ  on his forehead and لَآ اِلٰہَ اِلَّا اللہُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَّسُوْلُ اللہِ صلَّی اللہ علیہ وسلَّم on his chest. Keep in mind, this will be written after washing and before shrouding the deceased, and it will not be written with ink, rather with the index finger.[4]

*               If the deceased’s bones become visible outside the grave, it is necessary (wājib) to bury them.[5]
