causes spiritual ruin. Lying is a disease that weakens one’s faith. The individual who continues to lie becomes insensitive and numb to the fact that he is committing a major sin.

Each time a person lies, he thinks to himself that lying once will not have any major harm, even though lying is a major factor in the corruption of society. The liar is recorded as a great liar in the court of Allah Almighty, and he will be admitted to Hell.

The Destructions of Lying

Below are three blessed hadith regarding the harms of lying:

1.   The Greatest and Final Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said, “Telling the truth is a good deed, and good deeds lead to Paradise. Lying is a sin, and sins lead to Hell.”[1]

2.   The Beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم also said, “Truthfulness leads to good deeds, and good deeds lead to Paradise, and a man continues telling the truth until he becomes truthful in the court of Allah Almighty. Falsehood leads to sin, and sin leads to Hell, and a man continues lying until he becomes a grave liar in the court of Allah Almighty.”[2]

3.   A man came to the Beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم and said, “O Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم! Which action leads to Hell?” The Holy Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم answered, “Telling a lie. When someone lies, he sins, and when he sins, he becomes ungrateful. When he becomes ungrateful, he enters Hell.”[3]
