A Sinner blessed with repentance
Once, I boarded a boat headed to Basra. On board was a man with a servant. Just a short while after we embarked, the man told his servant to bring him some wine, and he drank whilst the servant sang.
He looked at me and remarked, “Do you have anything like this?” I said I have something far better and more beautiful than what he had. He asked to hear it, to which I recited these verses:
When the sun will be folded. And when the stars will fall. And when the mountains will be set in motion.[1]
Hearing these verses, the man began to cry. I then reached this verse:
And when the annals of deeds will be opened.[2]
The man exclaimed, “My servant! I free you for the sake of Allah. Pour this wine away!” He called me closer and asked, “My brother! What do you say? Will Allah accept my repentance?”
In response, I recited this verse:
Indeed, Allah loves those who repent sincerely, and those who are exceedingly pure.[3]
