Book Name:Faizan e Imam Hasan Basri رَحمۃُ اللہِ عَلَیْہ
سُبْحٰنَ اللہِ! ہٰذَا کَلَامُ الصِّدِّیق
This is the speech of a Ṣiddīq.[1]
A thought-provoking statement
Dear Islamic brothers! What did Imam Ḥasan al-Baṣrī رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه say exactly? What were the words that caused Imam Zayn al-ꜤĀbidīn رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ to refer to them as the speech of a Ṣiddīq?
Imam Ḥasan al-Baṣrī رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه said:
لَیْسَ الْعَجَبُ لِمَنْ ہَلَکَ کَیْفَ ہَلَکَ وَ اِنَّمَا الْعَجَبُ لِمَنْ نَجَا کَیْفَ نَجَا
There is no surprise in how the ruined became ruined. Surprise is in how the saved became saved.
Dear Islamic brothers! This is a hugely thought-provoking and wise statement.
If someone is disgraced on the Day of Judgement and made to enter Hellfire, this should not be considered a surprise, because it is dangerously easy to slip into Hellfire. Satan is constantly trying to misguide us, and our nafs ammārah is trapping us in desires. The nafs makes us lazy, prevents us from good deeds, and finds pleasure in sin. This makes it painfully easy to one to fall into Hellfire.
Fighting Satan, overcoming the nafs, suppressing worldly desires, whilst opposing love for the world, love for wealth, greed, and other spiritual diseases, and consistently performing good deeds; this is comparatively difficult. In other words, there is no amazement or surprise as to how someone ruined himself, but in how they saved themselves.
