His fear of Allah

Dear Islamic brothers! Imam Ḥasan al-Baṣrī رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه possessed deep-rooted fear of Allah. He was in a constant state of sorrow and would often be seen crying due to this fear.[1]

The scholar Ibn al-Jawzī رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه writes:

Ḥasan al-Baṣrī رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه would appear as though he had just returned from burying a close friend. He lived as though fire was suspended above his head. He sat like a prisoner about to be punished. He awoke in a way that seemed as though he had just witnessed the terrors of the Day of Judgement.

Somebody once asked him how he was feeling, to which he replied, “He whose boat capsizes in the middle of the ocean is in better state than I.”

When asked the reason for this, he explained, “I am a sinner, and I do not know whether the few good deeds I have done will be accepted or rejected.”[2]

صَلُّوۡا عَلَى الۡحَبِيۡب                                                      صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلٰى مُحَمَّد
