will then widen for him as far as he can see, and a door to Paradise will be opened for him.

When the wicked slave or the disbeliever is buried, the grave says to him, “You are not welcome! To me, you were the most hated of those who walked upon me. Since you have entered today, you shall see how I treat you.” Then the grave will begin closing in on him until it reaches him and his ribs interlock with each other.

[The narrator mentions that the Messenger of Allahصَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم illustrated this by interlacing his fingers, and then said:] Allah Almighty will appoint over him 70 huge serpents; if even one of them were to hiss on earth, nothing upon it would grow for as long as the world remained. They will bite him until the Day of Judgement.

[The Messenger of Allah صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم then said]اِنَّمَا الْقَبْرُ رَوْضَةٌ مِّنْ رِيَاضِ الْجَنَّةِ اَوْحُفْرَةٌ مِّنْ حُفَرِ النَّار The grave is either a garden from the gardens of Paradise, or a pit from the pits of the Fire.[1]

صَلُّوۡا عَلَى الۡحَبِيۡب                                          صَلَّى اللّٰهُ عَلٰى مُحَمَّد

The grave rebukes the deceased

Sayyidunā Abū al-Ḥajjāj al-Thumālī رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه relates that the beloved Prophet صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم said:

When the deceased is placed in the grave, it says to him, “May you be ruined! Did you not know that I am an abode of tribulation, an abode of darkness, an abode of solitude, and an
