The name Muhammad and the finality of prophethood

Dear Islamic brothers! Our scholars have mentioned a beautiful point regarding the Prophet’s name Muhammad. This name is derived from the word ḥamd, and ḥamd is always done at the end of something. For example, when we finish eating, we say اَلْـحَمْـدُ لـِلّٰـه. After drinking water, we say اَلْـحَمْـدُ لـِلّٰـه. Similarly, if we do any other task, we do ḥamd at the end of it.

Allah even states about the people of Paradise:

وَ اٰخِرُ  دَعْوٰىہُمْ اَنِ  الْحَمْدُ  لِلّٰہِ  رَبِّ  الْعٰلَمِیْنَ (۱۰)

and the ending of their supplication will be, “All praise is for Allah, the Lord of all the worlds.”[2]

We come to realise that ḥamd is always done at the end. If we now look at the names of the previous prophets, we see that none of them were named Muhammad. Why?

This is because prophets were still to come, and Allah sent our Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَاٰلِهٖ وَسَلَّم last. By naming him Muhammad, it was declared that now ḥamd has taken place so no new prophet will come after him.
