His distaste for backbiting

The imam was noted for never engaging in backbiting, not even against his enemies. Once, ꜤAbdullāh b. Mubārak رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه said to Sufyān Thawrī رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه: "Imam Abū Ḥanīfa avoids backbiting to such an extent that I have heard he does not even speak ill of his enemies."

Sufyān Thawrī replied: "By Allah! Imām Abū Ḥanīfa was extremely intelligent. How could he tolerate wasting his precious good deeds by backbiting?"[1]

سُـبْحٰـنَ الـلّٰــه Dear Islamic brothers! What exemplary character!

Just imagine, Imām Abū Ḥanīfa رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه never even spoke ill of his enemies. اَللّٰہُ اَکْبَر What amazing piety and wisdom.

Now, we should also reflect upon why he avoided backbiting. It was due of his intelligence, and awareness of the great effort required to earn good deeds. Good deeds are not easy to do they require one to suppress their carnal desires and avoid Satan’s traps. One must give up what they may want and even sacrifice their sleep. Losing such hard-earned good deeds over a few words of backbiting is nothing but foolishness.

The environment around us nowadays does not pay attention to this at all. Nowadays, the more backbiting somebody does, the more people think he is clever and sharp. At home, at work, with family, with friends; backbiting is everywhere we look. It's heartbreaking to see that people do not hesitate even to backbite about their parents. They talk, and they just keep talking!
