* It is recommended to recite the first and last part of surah al-Baqarah after the burial. Stand near the head of the deceased and recite الٓمّٓ until مُفْلِحُوْن, and then recite اٰمَنَ الرَّسُوۡلُ until the end of the surah whilst standing towards the feet side of the deceased.[2]
* It is permissible to place the Shajarah or ‘ahd nāmah in the grave. It is better to place it in the direction of the qibla where the deceased is facing by making an alcove in the side of the grave. In fact, Durr al-Mukhtār explains that it is permissible to write the ‘ahd nāmah on the shroud, and there is hope of forgiveness through this.
* It is permissible to write بِسْمِ اللہِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِیۡمِ on the deceased’s chest and forehead. It is also permissible to write بِسْمِ اﷲ on his forehead and لَآ اِلٰہَ اِلَّا اللہُ مُحَمَّدٌ رَّسُوْلُ اللہِ صلَّی اللہ علیہ وسلَّم on his chest. Keep in mind, write it with the index finger after washing and before shrouding the deceased. Do not write it with ink.[3]
* If the deceased’s bones come out of the grave, it is necessary to bury them.[4]
Du’āʾ to recite when kissing the thumbs
According to the schedule of Dawat-e-Islami’s sunnah-inspired weekly gathering, we will now memorise a du’āʾ. This week’s is: the du’āʾ to
