اَلسَّلَامُ عَلَیْکُمْ یَا اَہْلَ الْقُبُوْرِ وَرَحْمَۃُ اللہ – “O people of the grave! May the peace and mercy of Allah be upon you.”
He then asked them, “Will you tell us about yourselves, or shall I tell you?”
We heard a voice from the graves reply with وَ عَلَیْکَ السَّلَامُ وَرَحمَۃُ اللہِ وَبَرَکَاتُہٗ. Another voice then said, “O Amīr al-Muˈmimīn! Tell us what happened after our deaths.” ꜤAlī replied, “Listen well! Your wealth was distributed, your wives remarried, your children became orphans, and your enemies inhabited the reinforced homes you built. Now, you tell us about yourselves.”
The voice lamented, “Our shrouds are torn into pieces and our hair has fallen out. Our skin and flesh have rotted away, our eyes have fallen onto our cheeks, and pus is oozing from our nostrils. We reaped the consequences of our actions, and we suffered loss in what we left behind.”[1]
Dear Islamic brothers! This incident informs us of the great rank and hearing ability of Sayyiduna ꜤAlī, such that he was able to hear the deceased, talk to them about their condition in the grave, and give them news of worldly events. Undoubtedly, this miracle reflects his esteemed rank.
We also learn that whoever fails to rectify their actions and beliefs, remains heedless of the Hereafter, and succumbs to their worldly desires, will face many difficulties in the grave. The matters and desires they cared about in the world will not benefit them, just as the one who accumulates wealth relentlessly will not benefit from it in the grave. His inheritors will take ownership of his wealth. In fact, they will argue about how much they should receive.
