character. An important attribute he possessed, which we can implement too, is contemplating about the Hereafter.

Sayyiduna ꜤAlī رَضِىَ اللّٰهُ عَـنْهُ cried profusely when he thought about the Hereafter, and he would visit the cemetery to remember death. He constantly made dua for success in the Hereafter and worshipped while being immersed in its thought. He stayed awake during the night, abstained from the luxuries of the world, and even encouraged people to prepare for the Hereafter with his speeches.

Shaykh Junayd al-Baghdādī رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه describes a prominent aspect of Sayyiduna ꜤAlī’s character:

شَیْخُنَا فِی الْاُصُولِ وَ الْبَلاَءِ عَلِیُّ الْمُرْتَضٰی

In matters of the spiritual path and tolerating difficulties, ꜤAlī al-Murtaḍā is our leader.”[1]

A habit of Sayyiduna Alī

Ḍarrār رَحْمَةُ الـلّٰـهِ عَـلَيْه said:

I make Allah a witness that countless times, I saw ꜤAlī sitting fearfully in his mihrab at night, trembling in fear. He would hold his beard and move restlessly as if he had been bitten by a poisonous snake. He cried profusely and said, “O my Lord! O my Lord!”

He would then address the world by saying, “O world, have you adorned yourself to deceive me? Be gone! Deceive someone else! I have detached myself from you. Your lifespan is short, and it is easy to bear your calamities.”
